Lavender

Chapter Twenty-Two

Gio was dressed and on his second espresso by the time she wandered into the kitchen, wrapped in the robe he had left for her. Despite the night before, he expected their dance to start again. How long would it be before she pushed him into the ring for round two? The question made him hard, and he shifted on the barstool. “Coffee?” he offered, standing in order to get more comfortable.

“Where are you hiding her?” When Giovanni glanced back while approaching the espresso machine and starting another shot, Alessandra grinned and waved her hand at him. “Whoever it is that makes you look like you’re ready to walk the runway every day. Does she give your hair that just-fucked-and-I-don’t-care-if-you-know-I’m-sexy look, too? The whole I-know-how-to-shave-but-like-to-keep-this-five-o’clock-shadow-all-day-long-to-drive-the-girls-crazy thing you’ve got going on?” She exaggerated looking around. “Where is she? Where do you hide her?”

Giovanni laughed and started steaming milk. On the counter behind her, he saw the box of the bracelet that he had brought with him to Friday’s Gala. While watching her sleep, he had decided that not only would he give her the bracelet, but he would lock it in place, too. After last night, there was no doubt in his mind that Alessandra was his. She knew it, too. It was just not in her nature to give into him, but Giovanni could read her better than she read the books she spent her days with.

“She,” he said with a chuckle, “is my sister. Theresa owns a few different clothing stores and is starting her own line after this baby is born- or that’s her plan. To get her off my back, I let her completely overhaul my closet a few years ago. She’s got a good eye. I can’t complain.” As he continued to make Alessandra’s cappuccino, he nodded to imply the bedroom downstairs. “I’m sure you’ve noticed the clothes in the closet. I ordered them from her. She can handle anything else you’d like.”

“I have clothes.”

“We can agree to disagree.” He smirked at her eye roll and offered her the cup, which she thanked him for. “What would you like for breakfast?” He had already set an order in motion and only needed to call the front desk to have them complete it.

“I don’t eat breakfast.”

“We can order in from the French bakery two blocks away or, if you would like to go out, can walk down once you’re dressed.”

She took a drink of her coffee, using her tongue to wipe the foam from her lips. “Did I stutter, Gio? Struggling with your English again?” The laughter in her voice begged for a response. “No, non faccio colazione,” she said slowly, enunciating each word of her I don’t eat breakfast bullshit.

It was more fun to fuck with her without even touching her, he decided. “Buongiorno, Caleb,” Gio said after picking up the house phone. “The order I gave you this morning?”

“Put that in place, sir?”

“Yes, thank you.” He hung up the phone while watching the darkness that passed over her face when Alessandra realized she had already been outplayed.
